Los Angeles Valiant enter Week 5 of Overwatch League 2023 Summer Stage Qualifiers in shaky form. They’ve won just two games this stage, and even those were five-map games against two of the weakest OWL esports squads of the Summer Stage: Las Vegas Eternal and Los Angeles Gladiators.
The expectations for Los Angeles Valiant were never high, and even though they’re not playing well, the Valiant are at least in a better spot than the Gladiators and Eternal.
Their next opponents, London Spitfire, haven’t looked good this season but have shown improvement over the last month. They kicked off the Spring Stage Qualifier with losses against New York Excelsior (0-3) and Atlanta Reign (0-3) but quickly got back on their feet and strung together four wins against San Francisco Shock (3-1), Los Angeles Valiant (3-1), Los Angeles Gladiators (3-0) and Vegas Eternal (3-1).
London Spitfire have a lot more to prove, and their four-game win streak doesn’t instantly make them a great team. But they’ve been playing much better than the Valiant and are in excellent form, so barring any surprises, the Spitfire should win comfortably this weekend.

Los Angeles Gladiators have fallen apart at the start of the Summer Stage Qualifiers, and even though they didn’t look great before that, the Gladiators enter this match in the worst form they’ve been this season. With eight straight losses to their name, it’s clear that the roster changes backfired badly, and it might be too late to bounce back.
New York Excelsior are not one of the top OWL teams in the West, but they’ve looked much better than the Gladiators throughout the Summer Stage Qualifiers. They’ve won half of their six series (3-3), which includes a close 3-2 victory against LA Gladiators three weeks ago.
A lot of time has passed since, giving the Gladiators enough time to stabilise. But after seeing them struggle so much, it’s very tough to believe that the Los Angeles Gladiators can do much better in the rematch.

Los Angeles Valiant are a team no one expects to shine this season, which to some degree holds true for Guangzhou Charge as well. Both sides enter this match with a 0-2 record, but the Valiant hold a slightly better map differential due to their four-map series against Chengdu Hunters (1-3).
LA have not looked as bad as we thought they would, but that doesn’t mean we believe they’re a good team. The Charge are in the same boat, but they have as higher ceiling despite going 0-6 on the season.
We would have sided with the Charge at more appealing odds, but at this price, it makes more sense to take the Valiant with a map handicap.

New York Excelsior looked awful in their 0-3 loss against Chengdu Hunters, but they seemed much improved in their 3-1 win against the Spark. Seoul Dynasty, on the other side, had a solid performance against Guangzhou Charge (3-0) but disappointed in their 1-3 loss against Philadelphia Fusion.
What might make the Dynasty a more appealing pick is that they forced the Fusion to match point on all four maps. However, there is something about their playstyle that leads us to believe this one could end in favour of the Excelsior.
At the offered OWL betting odds, you have to take a shot with the outsiders.

The OWL betting odds suggest this will be an extremely one-sided affair, but we have reason to doubt that. On paper, Hangzhou Spark look extremely weak, but they did not perform too poorly in their bout with Philadelphia Fusion last week.
Even though the Spark lost 1-3, they still took the series lead and held the Fusion to match point on all maps. They followed that up with a very poor showing against New York Excelsior (1-3), so they might not be a very consistent team.
It will all depend on which version of Hangzhou we get here. Shanghai Dragons aren’t as good as last year, so there is a world where the Spark steal at least two maps.

Boston Uprising are priced as -188.68 favourites for this match, which may seem fair, but we weren’t convinced with their recent performances.
Both of these teams faced Los Angeles Gladiators last week, and they both lost 0-3. Boston won four rounds (4-7), whereas London Spitfire won only two (2-7).
Regardless of what those results might suggest, it’s the performances these two sides have shown on the final day of the week that makes us trust the Spitfire more. This could be a close one, but there is no denying London are more consistent.

Florida Mayhem are a weird team. Even though they are winning games (2-0), they are also showing weaknesses – most notably in their 3-1 win against Vancouver Titans.
San Francisco Shock are an entirely different story. They played well in their 2-3 loss against Houston Outlaws, and it was ultimately a poor coaching decision that lost them the game.
Florida might steal one map, but they seem far too shaky for us to believe they can achieve much more. Expect a straightforward win for the reigning OWL champions.

Los Angeles Gladiators has had the best stage so far in the Overwatch League, losing just 1 match against Los Angeles Valiant and winning the other 7, some of them against formidable opponents such as New York Excelsior. A top 4 finish for Gladiators is guaranteed at this point, but I’m sure the team will want to place as high as possible. In particular, a 1st place finish would almost certainly allow it to dodge New York Excelsior in the Semifinals of the Stage 4 Title Matches.
Another week, another 2 guaranteed losses for Shanghai Dragons, a team that’s currently holding an undisputed record for the entire field of esports: 38 losses in a row. No doubt, the end result will be 0 V – 4 D for Dragons, as its final two opponents are very strong teams. Someone should really make a documentary about these guys as their journey during the Inaugural Season of the Overwatch League has been the stuff of legend.
Needless to say, Los Angeles Gladiators is several tiers above Shanghai Dragons in every respect. Regardless of what statistics you want to look at, this match should be an easy 3 – 1 or 4 – 0 victory in favor of Gladiators.

Los Angeles Valiant (8 V – 0 D) vs. San Francisco Shock (4 V – 4 D)
After a 7 W – 3 L record and a 3rd place finish in Stage 3, Los Angeles Valiant improved its playstyle and has crushed everyone so far in Stage 4. The team is currently sitting at the top of the league, even though it has already faced some of the other main contenders. Both New York Excelsior and Los Angeles Gladiators were defeated by LA Valiant in the previous weeks, a sign which clearly proves this version of the team is much stronger than any of the previous ones.
After transferring in the head coach of Boston Uprising, San Francisco Shock sought to improve its Stage 3 results even more, but unfortunately hasn’t managed to accomplish that goal. Without any doubt, Shock is headed towards a 5 V – 5 D result in Stage 4.
From head to head (4 – 0) to recent form results, every single type of indicator points towards a Los Angeles Valiant victory in this match.

Seoul Dynasty (2 V – 6 D) vs. Dallas Fuel (5 V – 3 D)
Seoul Dynasty hasn’t had a very good run in Stage 4, winning just 2 of its matches and against completely irrelevant opponents: Shanghai Dragons and Florida Mayhem. Throughout the entire duration of the Overwatch League, Seoul Dynasty has been one of the fairly strong teams, finishing Stage 1, 2 and 3 in 5th (7 V – 3 D), 4th (7 V – 3 D) and 7th (5 V – 5 D) place respectively. In Stage 4, Dynasty lost very close matches against though opponents such as Los Angeles Valiant (2 – 3), Philadelphia Fusion (2 – 3) and London Spitfire (2 – 3). These close but unfortunate defeats are a testament to Seoul Dynasty’s capacity to hold its own against almost any adversary.
Dallas Fuel seems to have reinvented its playstyle and has performed fairly well so far in Stage 4, winning against strong opponents such as London Spitfire and Philadelphia Fusion and being ranked 4th in the standings table. Compare this situation to its 1 V – 9 D result from Stage 3 and you can’t help but be impressed with how much a team can improve in such a short period of time.
Going into this match, I think that Dallas Fuel has what it takes to walk away with a victory. Especially against this version of Seoul Dynasty.

San Francisco Shock, Seoul Dynasty and Boston Uprising lost against London Spitfire during the first 3 weeks of this stage.
The recent form and overall performance statistics favor Los Angeles Valiant to win this match. However, these two teams have already met each other twice, and Spitfire won both times with a score of 3 – 2. That makes this match a great opportunity to bet on the underdog. No doubt, Spitfire’s odds for this match will be huge, simply because the team is regarded as a longshot against Los Angeles Valiant. So even a bet with a +1.5 maps handicap on Spitfire will yield really high profits.

Last week, Excelsior lost against Los Angeles Valiant in a very close series but is still much stronger than any other team in the league. So I don’t see how Gladiators could overcome this hurdle and actually upset the established order.
The two previous matches between these two teams ended with 2 New York Excelsior victories. Furthermore, Excelsior has performed much better than Gladiators throughout the entire duration of the Overwatch League. That clearly suggests that it’s the favorite here and by a lot, in spite of the current identical Stage 4 record: 5 V – 1 D for both teams.

The victories came against Seoul Dynasty, Houston Outlaws, Dallas Fuel and Boston Uprising, while the defeats came against Los Angeles Gladiators and London Spitfire.
Philadelphia Fusion finished Stage 3 in a modest 8th place with 5 victories and 5 defeats. For the time being, the team seems to be headed towards a similar result. In Stage 4, Fusion won against 3 irrelevant opponents (Boston Uprising, Florida Mayhem and Shanghai Dragons) and lost against Dallas Fuel, New York Excelsior and Los Angeles Gladiators. It seems that every time it faces a strong team, Fusion has a high chance of choking. Because of that, I fully expect San Francisco Shock to win this match.

This is a clear sign that the great team from just one month ago is no more and has been replaced with a shadow of its former self. Going forward, expect Uprising to lose most of its matches against the top contenders.
Based on what we’ve seen from both of these teams in Stage 4, head to head and overall performance statistics throughout the Overwatch League don’t really matter here. It’s quite clear that LA Valiant is much stronger than Boston Uprising at this point and should have a field day in this match.

This will be an interesting encounter between two teams that used to share adjacent spots close to the bottom of the standings table. In Stage 3 however, San Francisco Shock went through a bit of a Renaissance, winning against the odds a few times and amassing more victories than anyone expected. At this point, San Francisco Shock is a considerably stronger team than Florida Mayhem and should win this match win relative ease.

Boston Uprising (8 W – 0 L) vs. Los Angeles Valiant (6 W – 2 L)

Nobody can stop Boston Uprising at this point. With every passing week, Uprising is proving more and more clearly that its recent form is its real form. The team has changed a lot after Stage 2 and is now the strongest competitor in the league. Arguably, Boston Uprising has already faced the toughest opponents with the exception of Los Angeles Valiant, whom they will encounter this week. If it wins that match, Boston Uprising, will almost certainly be the first team to finish a stage in OWL without losing a single match.
Currently sitting at number 3 in the standings table for Stage 3, Los Angeles Valiant has had an excellent run so far, defeating teams like Seoul Dynasty and Los Angeles Gladiators. Its two defeats came against London Spitfire and Houston Outlaws. Valiant’s current spot in the league might be quite deceptive, due to its many victories against very weak opponents. We’ll have to see how the team performs this week against Boston Uprising and Philadelphia Fusion. In all likelihood, it will get crushed by the first and then win against the second.

New York Excelsior is the strongest team in OWL in terms of overall results throughout the entire competition. In Stage 3, Excelsior has managed to beat everyone so far with the exception of Boston Uprising. Their opponents were pretty strong for the most part, so most of the victories are totally relevant for assessing Excelsior’s true strength. In all likelihood, we will continue to see great performances from this squad. Given that New York Excelsior’s final two opponents will be Dallas Fuel and Shanghai Dragons, it’s almost a certainty that they’ll finish Stage 3 with a 9 – 1 record.

However, both of these matches were very close (score 2 – 3), proving that the team is deceptively strong in spite of its mediocre results.
London Spitfire is not doing too well at the moment, although it won last week against Los Angeles Valiant, a team which in turn had defeated Los Angeles Gladiators the exact same week.
Overall performance throughout the Overwatch League favors London Spitfire. The head to head results between these two teams favor Los Angeles Gladiators (1 – 0). Stage 3 statistics favor Gladiators as well. All things considered, I still think that Spitfire will win this match. And that’s because of the great form they showed even in their defeats against the top teams. They practically almost always came close to winning and only lost the match in game 5.

San Francisco Shock (4 W – 2 L) vs. New York Excelsior (5 W – 1 L)
